HAIR SHAFT DISORDERS
Problems with the hair shaft are normally noticed as a problem with the feel and texture of the hair. These types of problems are usually created by external factors such as overexposure to heat or strong chemicals. The hair is extremely strong but it is subjected to may stresses and strains and does have its breaking point.
A trichologist may need to liaise with the patient’s hairdresser on these cases, depending on the amount of damage.
A consultation will usually identify any possible factors, and as long as these can be identified, a treatment plan can be offered to resolve the issue. Once the hair shaft has been compromised, any hair damage will need to be removed by cutting.
There are however a number of conditions that affect the texture of the hair that are genetic. The trichologists microscope can look in detail at the hair shaft to see beyond the naked eye.
